Church website statistics matter because they reveal how effectively your church is reaching and engaging its community. This data enables you to make informed decisions to better leverage your website to meet your needs.

The statistics we're discussing (and the statistics that your website can reveal) can provide key insights and clarity for improving this important tool!

1. 80% of People Visit a Church’s Website Before Attending in Person.

Before a first-time visitor even walks through your door, they will likely have checked you out online. Your website needs to show off your unique personality and be inviting enough for them to want to learn more about you.

What this means for pastors and churches…

Maybe they Googled your church, or maybe they stumbled across your church by accident. Either way,  as you are building your site consider first-time visitors. The best church website designs will always make navigating the site simple.

So, look at your site with a critical eye:

  • What are first-time visitors looking for?
  • How can you make them feel welcome and entice them to visit in-person?
  • What do you want them to know about your church?

As of September 2024, people using mobile devices contribute to 63.38% of all website traffic. Therefore, your website needs to be responsive; it needs to adapt easily between a computer screen and a mobile device. Having a responsive site improves user experience and increases your search rankings with Google.

What this means for you and your church?

Making your website responsive is a simple but necessary step to improve engagement on your site, increase accessibility, and drive up your ranking with search engines.

3. 75% of Visitors Make Judgments About a Church’s Credibility Based on Its Website.

This is a sobering statistic now that we know stat #1 (80% check a church website before coming in person). A well-designed website will ensure your website conveys trust and credibility, encouraging potential visitors to explore more.

What this means for YOU:

  1. Make information easy to find: you will lose people quickly if they can’t find what they want to know.
  2. Remove outdated content: prevent your site from feeling cluttered. Any content that is no longer relevant should be taken down.
  3. Ensure your site is visually appealing: Build your website with a template that is easy to use and professional.

4. 61% say that if they don’t find what they’re looking for within about five seconds, they leave.

This stat underscores the importance of a clear and user-friendly website design. If someone landing on your website doesn't quickly find the info they're looking for - they're gone.

How you can improve your website, with this in mind:

  • Display worship times, address, and a link to directions.
  • Include a warm, inviting message for newcomers and regular attendees.
  • Use buttons like "Plan Your Visit," "Attend Church Online," or "Get Involved" to guide visitors to key actions.
  • Feature important ministries like kids' programs, small groups, or upcoming events.
  • Make your contact information prominent and accessible.

5. Pages With Videos Get 88% More Engagement

That's a LOT more engagement... so, including videos on your church homepage is a powerful way to connect with your visitors.

What this means for pastors and churches…

Start with a welcome video on your homepage! This will give visitors a warm and inviting first impression of your church. Online videos like welcome messages, podcasts, testimonials, or sermon previews help create a personal connection, making visitors feel more comfortable and excited about attending in person.

A short video can showcase what to expect at your church—worship style, community events, or kids’ programs—saving visitors the time of reading lengthy text. This can be especially appealing for visual learners, engaging with them and making it easier for them to grasp your message.

6. Churches that provide options for giving/tithing online increase overall donations by 32%.

While this stat is pretty self-explanatory, the implications for churches are huge. If you aren’t offering online giving options, you are missing out on potential donors. Don’t wait another day, include online giving options on your website.

What this means for pastors and churches:

  • Double check that the church giving software tool your church supports online giving.
  • Place a prominent “Give” button everywhere on your website. It should be easy to find!
  • Confirm your website can take credit cards, debit cards, transfers, digital wallets, etc accommodate all donors.
  • Provide Recurring Giving Options. This will increase consistent giving.
  • Thank Donors Automatically: Set up automated thank-you emails or messages to acknowledge gifts and strengthen relationships

7. The top five Google search results receive more than 65% of the clicks.

If your church isn’t ranking within the top five websites on a search engine results page, then you are likely not going to be found by new people looking for churches. The way to do this is by improving your church’s Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Your website needs to show up near the top for major keywords related to your church; such as “churches near me” or “family-friendly church”. Here are some ways to improve your ranking with search engines:

  • Create Quality Content: Regularly update your site with blogs, sermon transcripts, or event info using relevant keywords.
  • Create a Business Profile with Google: Ensure your church is listed with the correct contact details and location.
  • Encourage Reviews: Ask your congregation to give your church a review on Google and Facebook.

8. 64% of churchgoers say their church's website helps them engage with their church.

  • Do you have a way for members to ask for prayer and support?

What this means for pastors and churches…

Streaming in real time can help your church create an online community where people interact during services, through comments, live chats, or prayer requests. This enhances engagement and fosters a sense of belonging, even for those attending virtually. Learn which presentation software will help you with your goals for a Sunday morning service.

Through live streaming, your reach is expanded to a global audience. You are no longer bound by geography and can grow your community beyond the four walls of your church.
